Mobile Broadband Internet over Bluetooth

E-mail

What you need

To using mobile internet over Bluetooth you need a few common things that is probably you have all ready. You just need a computer with Ubuntu (Linux distribution) operating system loaded. Then you have a Bluetooth enabled Mobile phone (Cellphone) which you want to use as a GPRS/EDGE/cdma 2000 1x/EVDO/HSDPA modem. You don't need a data cable because your data communication from your PC to Mobile phone will be wireless through Bluetooth. You should have a data plan from your Mobile operator for using internet. A unlimited data plan or some thing like is recommended. Because you may wish to using internet too much.

My Configuration

My Configuration was followings:

  • Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) intel based 32 bit version
  • USB Bluetooth modem on my PC
  • Sagem x700 Cellphone
  • Unlimited EDGE connection

This should be portable across all Debian-based distributions and telecoms. But the configuration might vary from phone to phone (notably the channel number).

Make Your System Ready

Before starting the job you have to make your system ready. You may have to install some packages. By default those packages should be installed on your Ubuntu system. But make sure they all are installed.

Multimedia, flash and java support on Ubuntu

E-mail

What you want

By default Ubuntu cannot play any audio, video file which contain proprietary codec. So after install Ubuntu on your pc you cannot play your very favourite music & videos. If those audio & video file contain mp3, aac, wma, wmv, mpeg, mp4, divx etc file format or codec you have to do some extra but very easy job. Due to violation of DMCA 2000 in USA & some other country Ubuntu doesn't contain those file support by default.

It's simple & easy

It's really simple & easy to add support of those audio, video files & also flash, Java in your Ubuntu pc. By default Ubuntu has a great feature when you try to play or watch some unsupported contain it prompt you to search & install those codec from Ubuntu online downloading servers. So with a few waiting seconds you can play & watch those contain without any more obstacle. With this way you can play & watch all most all of the contain in the world. Even you can play DVD, Blue ray disk, HD-DVD, H.264 & more.

Advance hand

Though you have support for all most everything but may not all. You may not watch some DVD which are protected & also some other contain. Or if you want to do all this job manually try do this in console.

First of all you have to check all your repositories enabled in Software sources. Software sources will be found in System>Administration>Software sources.

Ubuntu GRUB boot loader menu editing

E-mail

Why you need this

The default boot loader menu may looks dull to you. Because of few systematic information in the menu title should bored you. And don't need to know the Linux kernel version each time you boot. So i believe this default boot loader should modified to a much more simplified & practicle version. That you help you to boot. Especially in multiboot option you may prefer to put the that operating system top which you use most.

Default GRUB Boot menu

The default boot menu has three option for Ubuntu. Of course it placed top of the menu order. The number one option gives the normal boot to Ubuntu system in Graphical User Interface. Then the number two help you to recover your Ubuntu system if necessary. And this time Ubuntu system boot into a text based command console. Then the third option is for memory testing. I think this option is not required everybody always. And i believe most of the user never need to use this.

If you use a multiboot environment especially if your PC has other operating system installed (Windows system or other operating system) before you setup your Ubuntu system then a line Other operating systems: will be included. After this line other operating system's boot option will be included. So the default GRUB Boot menu may look like this.

Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.10, memtest86+
Other operating systems:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Restore GRUB to MBR or a partition with Ubuntu Live CD

E-mail

What you want

When installing ubuntu on a pc at the end of the installation GRUB boot loader will be automatically installed. But if there is any wrong happen during your installation the installation process will be stop instantly. So Grub boot loader will not be install & you can not boot your pc. And you have to start the whole installing process. This is really a bad experience.

You can even lost Grub loader if you use a multi boot environment with windows & windows boot loader may overwrites MBR. Because it doesn't know GRUB boot loader. So you can not boot to your Ubuntu system.

So you have to restore your GRUB boot loader to boot to Ubuntu.

What we need

We need a Ubuntu Live CD. Though with Ubuntu alternate CD we can restore GRUB boot loader. But in this article we just know how we can restore a GRUB boot loader with a Live CD. Ubuntu Live CD is most popular because it gives the most easy way to install Ubuntu in your pc. Ubuntu Live CD is also available free cost from http://shipit.ubuntu.com. Or we can download a Ubuntu Live CD from http://www.ubuntu.com & then burn it to a blank CD.

How to do

Please carefully read these instruction completely then do.

First we reboot the pc to enter into the BIOS. We can enter into the BIOS by pressing F2 or, DEL during booting. Then we change the boot order sequence to CD Rom Drive. Save & exit the BIOS. System will reboot now. Now make sure Ubuntu Live CD is in the CD Rom Drive. Because we want to boot from Ubuntu Live CD.
